These wheel thrown vessels have been created either from Imperial White Porcelain or Stoneware clay, and were altered just after construction. Once leather hard, the foot rings were trimmed and the lip or rim was cut and carved. By working with sharp angles and flowing curves, I tried to make the opening more flowing, therefore inviting the viewer to look inside.
Some of the pieces have been pierced or small sections have been carved out to allow the passing of light and colour from within. Others have also been scratched into to reveal an underneath layer of colour. This technique is called sgraffito.
These works were sprayed and glazed with multiple layers of different coloured under-glazes and stains. Most also have some glazed surfaces, and they are all fired to 1280° c.
Several pieces in this collection are available from my online shop.
